Do you want to see your clients cry? (happy tears, of course!)
Do you want to get more word of mouth referrals?
Do you want to offer an array of beautiful products without having to do more work?
Offer a photo album!
I was surprised to recently learn that so many photographers don’t offer an album to their clients. Maybe it is because many clients only want the disk of photos thinking they will create their own album. Maybe it is because you have avoided album services because it seems overwhelming and just another thing to distract you from what you love- photography.
I can tell you two things- the client will most likely get overwhelmed by the quantity of photos and give up the thought of an album and adding an album to your product list IS SO SIMPLE.
Why should you offer an album?
The most important reason is that you will be giving your client a tangible story from their amazing event. A disk of 2000 photos is not a story- it is overwhelming, so time consuming, and absolutely confusing for the client. But an album, with about 100 photos, thick pages, striking colors, bound in hard cover is show stopping. The albums really are beautiful.
This is where you will see your client’s cry happy tears. When you hand them the album months after the event you are handing them a true heirloom. My 2-year-old daughter looks at our wedding album and names all of our family members and says ‘fun’!
Also, an album is so shareable and other people actually DO want to look at it. Friends and family do not want to sit and look at hundreds of photos on a computer screen, but they will enjoy holding and flipping through a beautiful book.
Every time I showed my book someone asked, “Who did your photos? Who made this album?” A word of mouth recommendation while holding the album is an amazing referral for you.
And, the price of your services can rise because you offer such a professional, beautiful final product.
“You really love each other”
I was one of those clients that only wanted the photos. I thought, “I don’t need a big, fancy album.” I just wanted to print a few photos, hang them on the wall, and that’s it.
However, my cousin who was married 10 years earlier and has children changed my mind. The kids love to look at the album and see all of the family smiling and laughing. They say “look at mommy and daddy, they really love each other.”
I instantly imagined my future children and that really sweet moment.
No extra work for you
The last, and maybe most convincing, reason to offer an album is that is doesn’t create more work for you.
The book can be completely made by specialists- a graphic designer (like me!) designs the pages and an album printer will create the final product.
You and your studio benefit from offering a great product and earning more money, but it will not distract you from what you love- photography.
There are great reasons why you should offer albums, yet the most important reason is for the client- they will have a family heirloom. The album is a complete story of an event, easy to share and flip through, high quality, and beautiful. And, it is COMPLETE, because that disk of photos is highly unlikely to become a scrapbook or album. Who knows, that disk might be unreadable in future devices (just like VHS) so the photos will be lost, but an album will always remain.
